Many RECREATIONAL AND SPORTS ACTIVITIES are available in the area. Boone County has two country clubs with golf courses and a racquet club. Five major lakes (Bull Shoals, Norfork, Table Rock, Beaver and Taneycomo) and three major rivers (White, Buffalo and Kings) are close by for fishing, boating and other water sports. City parks provide tennis and basketball courts, picnic facilities, a walking trail, fishing, playground equipment and a municipal pool. There are baseball, softball and soccer fields for league play. The Sports Complex hosts annual sports tournaments and the large multi-purpose Youth Center is a facility for groups and organizations of all types and ages.

Harrison, the county seat, is the largest city in Boone County with a 2000 estimated population of 13,000 and estimated county population of 34,000.

What a LOCATION!!! Harrison is located in the northwest portion of Arkansas, 29 miles south of the Missouri border, in the middle of picturesque Ozark Vacation land situated on U.S. 62-412 and U.S. 65 highways. Little Rock, the state capital of Arkansas is located 134 miles south.


If you're looking for unspoiled scenic beauty, you can find it in every direction from Harrison. Just 15 minutes to the south and southwest are the Boston Mountains of the Ozark region. Only an hour and a half to the south of Harrison is the Ozark Folk Center at Mountain View plus the Jewel of the U.S. Forest Service, Blanchard Springs Caverns. The Folk Center features seasoned craftspeople demonstrating Arkansas pioneer skills. The Caverns, managed by the Forest Service, may be toured.

Several scenic drives wind through the Boston Mountains, including Arkansas Highway 7, which is designated as one of the 10 most scenic drives in the United States, and is the Arkansas's first National Scenic Byway. Drives in other directions offer outstanding scenery as well, along with pure, fresh air and views of each season's finery.

Canoeing, fishing and other water activities abound at the Buffalo National River, 15 minutes south; the White River, 50 minutes east for trout fishing; Bull Shoals Lake, 25 minutes north; Table Rock Lake, 25 minutes north, both offer water skiing and fishing. Within an hour's drive north from Harrison is booming Branson, Missouri and Victorian Eureka Springs is located to the west.

Climate

The Climate is moderate with four distinct seasons and favors outdoor activities. Each season is special; from flowering springtime, through summer fun and colorful autumn to exciting winter which offers both sunshine and snowfall. The average winter temperature is 45 degrees, and the average summer temperature is 92 degrees. Precipitation is usually well distributed throughout the year. One or more snowfalls occur each winter, but the snow cover usually only remains for a few days. Elevation is 1,359 above sea level.

Over 65,000 volumes in the collection provide a full range of materials that patrons normally desire. There is an excellent children's collection, a large print collection, genealogy collection, small forms collection, Internet access computers, meetings and program facilities. Friends of the Library are active in supporting and helping keep the library updated. The library is located at 221 West Stephenson.

Hospital

The NORTH ARKANSAS REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER in Harrison is a 174 bed fully certified medical facility providing a wide range of hospital services. NARMC has 700 employees, 49 active medical staff members, 33 consultant physicians and 24-hour emergency service with physician, staff and ambulances.
